Qiao Courtyard
Built during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) in the Qing Dynasty, the Qiao Family Courtyard lies in the Jingzhong Basin of Shanxi Province. The courtyard covers an area of 8,724.8 square meters, consisting of 6 large yards and 20 small yards with total of 313 houses. It was renovated and repaired many times during the reigns of Emperor Tongzhi and Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty till the early year of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It was an old Chinese residential courtyard that had been thrived for over two centuries. When you overlook the layout of the entire complex you will find out that four groups of square structures as yards are lying in between with several groups of transverse and vertical structure of buildings, which compose a form like a Chinese character, Double Happiness. Such unique and skillful architecture is hardly seen any place else. Walking into the courtyard, you will immediately find out an 80-meter-long straight stone pavement that divides 6 courtyards into a northern and southern row. There are slope protections between the pavements and nearby walls. The Qiao family's ancestral temple is at the end of the western side, facing directly to the gate. There are four main buildings and six other structures, such as Gate Pavilion, Geng Pavilion and Tiao Pavilion. The sidewalks on the roof of every yard are connected to allow for patrol.
Those groups of buildings appear to be serious and grand from outside, though they are splendid and orderly inside, which is the typical architecture style of the residence for wealthy and big family in feudal society in the North of China. Speaking about the architecture nowadays, it has been admired as a bright pearl of residential building in North China.
The Qiao Family Courtyard had been renovated and converted as the Folk Museum of Qi County by the local government in 1986. The museum contains 42 exhibition rooms covering a wide range of folk-custom in the Shanxi Jinzhong area with approximately 2,000 pieces of exhibits on display.
This Courtyard had been made more popular domestically and internationally after 1990 when it was served as the location of the Chinese movie “Raising the Red Lantern” by the Chinese famous director, Zhang Yi-mou. There were over several hundred red lanterns left behind after the screening, thus the courtyard was made vividly in the reappearance of what luxurious life wealthy people lived in feudal society.

Wang Courtyard has a history of about 5 thousand years and it is Ming dynasty architecture. Its total area is about 150 thousand square meters and 45 thousand meters has been listed in the provincial antique to preserve. Nowadays three architectural groups including the Gaojia Cliff, the Red Gate Fort and the Xiaoyi Ancestral Shrine which are respectively built in different periods of times in Qing dynasty are named the Chinese People Art Museum or Wangjia Museum. The whole area is about 45 thousand square meters and the architecture includes 123 big and small courtyards and 1118 houses.
