Suzhou, founded in 514BC,is one of the oldest towns in the Yangtze basin. Grounded on the tradition of Wu Culture, the classical gardens of Suzhou have a special appeal to visitors. Up to now, 9 of the classical gardens have been registered by UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage. Suzhou remains one of the most beautiful cities in China with its blue web of interlocking canals and classical gardens as well as famous silk industry that inspired the Chinese to name this area “paradise on earth”. It is often referred to as “The Venice of the East,” Suzhou was the jewel of artistic society during the Ming and Qing Dynasties as well.
Most of Suzhou gardens used to be privately owned, and unlike the stately and ornate imperial gardens, they are intended to achieve an artistic atmosphere of elegance and ease. In creating the gardens, priority is given to recapture the essence of nature by poetic implications techniques of painting, to fulfill the artistic concept that “man made as they are, the gardens appear like the work of nature.”
Suzhou gardens occupy only limited areas, and they are generally combined with residential quarters for the purpose of living and entertainment. Their general feature is that they reflect a much bigger world through a small one by masterly alterations of the solid and the void, the technique of concealment, and perspectives of depth.

Covering 51,950 sq.m,the Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest of all classical gardens in Suzhou . It is centered upon the broad expanse of a lake, making up about one fifth of the total area. With well spaced buildings, the garden landscape and water scape are simple, extensive and natural, possessing the traditional appearances of the Ming Dynasty. It is divided into three parts; the eastern, middle and the western parts. The house lies in the south of the garden.   Suzhou optional tours: Humble Administrator's Garden

The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is the world's longest man-made waterway, being 1,800 kilometers long. The canal connects the present cities of Beijing in the north and Hangzhou in the south, which served as dynastic capitals in the past, and contains 24 locks and 60 bridges. Since most of China's major rivers flow from west to east, the fact that the Grand Canal runs north and south provides it as an important connector between the Yangtze River valley and the Yellow River valley, and other minor river systems. It is being restored as a water-diversion conduit.
The building of the canal began in 506 B.C. during the Wu kingdom. It was extended during the Qi Dynastry, and later by Emperor Yangdi of the Sui Dynasty during six years of furious construction from 605-610 A.D.

Suzhou embroidery in Qing dynasty reached its culmination. Suzhou was called the “market of embroidery”, famous both at home and abroad. There were various ways of knitting and they were applied widely. Mountains, rivers, lakes, pavilions, flowers and birds, characters were all embroidered.
At the end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of Ming dynasty, Songtao, an expert at embroidery, renovated the traditional way of knitting. Flowers and birds, characters embroidered in new ways, or endowed with new meaning ,were very characteristic.
Double-side embroidery, the specific style of suzhou embroidery can be appreciated from both sides. Pictures look exactly the same and wonderful on both sides. Special ways are used in knitting instead of knotting. There the end of silk threads are invisible. It is knitted in the right angle without piercing the other side. Both sides will present the same excellent effect.
