Shanghai started out in the fourth century as a fishing village and became a town till the middle of the thirteenth century. After the Opium War, Shanghai was gradually and forcibly opened as a “treaty port” in the mid year of the nineteen century when it had been opened to foreign trade and led to its partition into British, French and later Japanese concessions. From that time on, aggressors from many countries began to flock in and the city became known as a “paradise for adventurers. Covering out their own spheres of influence, England, France, the United States and Japan settled here by seizing their respective “concessions” which was regarded as the “territory” of each country. It was considered as the colonial period with number of the characterized buildings and architectures of cosmopolitan by those owners of the concessions which made Shanghai as a fascinating mix of East and West, hence the name of “Paris of the orient”.
The great development of Shanghai should be highlighted till the beginning of the 1990s when the Shanghai government launched a series of new strategies to attract foreign investments for building up Shanghai as the most advanced city in China by opening up Pudong, once a rural area of Shanghai as new technology zone of development. With the successful strategies and in addition to a stronger manufacturing and technology base, Pudong has now become the financial district of Shanghai, with a lot of skyscrapers and numerous foreign and joint venture enterprises and projects which had pushed Shanghai greatly into a world-class financial and economic center of China, and even Asia. Today, Shanghai has again become not only the attraction to foreign investors to take the adventure to make money but also tourists worldwide to come to visit the old temple and culture in this modern city. |

Nanjing Road
Being the main shopping street in Shanghai, Nanjing Road starts at the Bund, south of the Peace Hotel, and runs westward, with Shanghai’s center point, the People’s Square in the middle, Nanjing Road was once famously named as one of the World’s Seven Great Roads in the 1930’s and known as the” Wall Street of Asia”. This bustling street is flanking with numerous department stores, small shops, restaurants, theaters and cinemas etc.
The eastern end of Nanjing Road is a pedestrian zone. Big names like Mont Blanc, Tiffany and Dunhill all have stores on Nanjing Road, but smaller stores do very well there too. Of the 600 plus businesses on Nanjing Road a majority are western, but the street is known for being on the cutting edge of upcoming trends so local designers do well there too.
Apart from the shopping and eating, Nanjing Road is a festival center as well. Especially during Christmas and Chinese New Year, Nanjing Road is a great place to go to enjoy city-wide celebrations. |

Yuyuan Garden
This garden was originally designed in the sixteenth century by provincial governor, Pan Yun-duan, in honor of his father who was the then government minister. The construction took over twenty years to complete. It is ingeniously laid out to create the feeling of spaciousness within a small area, a garden within a garden with many closely-packed pavilions, zigzag bridges over ponds, rockeries and halls. This garden is planted with arching trees and flowers which brings the beauty to the garden additionally.
The famous Nanxiang restaurant is near the entrance of Yu Garden, selling various types of delicious steamed dumplings. The tasty food attracts a swarm of locals and tourists. The Temple of the City God, Shanghai Old Street and Chenxiangge Nunnery are also near Yu Garden and all these sites represent typical Shanghai. |
|
| |
Shanghai Museum used to be near the Bund. It has 120,000 precious artifacts, which narrate a story of China's 5,000-year civilization.
Even though it opens eight hours a day, it's difficult to see every corner of the museum in one day. Sculpture, furniture, calligraphy, coins, ceramics, jade-ware, minority ethnic handicrafts and ancient bronzes are on display.
It's easy to look around on your own, since labels in English are arranged beside every piece. You can also rent an audio commentary machine, but you need to pay a deposit. |
