Laolongtou, or "Old Dragon's Head" is the easternmost end of the Great Wall, which stretches 23 meters into the sea like a dragon drinking water, hence its name. This part of the Great Wall was built in the 7 th year of Wanli reign in the Ming dynasty (1579) and was mended in the 7 th year of Kangxi reign in the Qing dynasty (1668). Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty would stop here for a visit on their way to Fengtian (Present - day Shenyang) to worship their ancestors, which makes the city even more worthy of its name. Standing at Laolongtou, facing the misty sea, visitors can easily picture Emperor Qin (221-207 BC), the first emperor of China, sending people into the sea here to find a drug that would give him immortality. You can see the Great Wall as it zigzags over the rolling mountains like a giant dragon to the north. Looking to the south you can see the vast expanse of sea stretching far to merge with the sky. At this moment you feel as if you could embrace the whole world.

The 52.1-kilometre-long Golden Beach is located southwest of the Beidaihe area. Its fine sand and shallow, calm, clear water make it a great place for swimming.
West of the Golden Beach, sand dunes stretch 40 kilometers against a green belt of woodland. Some sand dunes are 30-40 meters high, which is very rare in coastal areas. Sliding down these hills is a popular activity.

Geziwo or Pigeon's Nest Park is also named Eagle’s Horn Park, because of a huge rock like a tierce stood erected. The rock is 20 meters high and since groups of pigeons inhabit o-n the cracks of the rock, hence the name Pigeon’s Nest Park. Shanhaiguan Pass or the First Pass is a site of China First Class National Cultural Site. Along with Jiayuguan Pass and Juyongguan Pass, it is one of the major passes of the Great Wall of China.
It is a popular tourist destination, featuring the eastern end of the Great Wall. The "First Pass Under Heaven" is also a noticeable tourist attraction. The place where the wall itself meets the Pacific Ocean (at the Bohai Sea) has been nicknamed the "Old Dragon's Head."

Mengjiangnu was said in a historical tale that Mengjiangnu in the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC) cried over her husband dead of toiling to build the Great Wall and buried under it so loudly that the Great Wall in Qinhuangdao collapsed due to the resonance. The story of Mengjiangnu's deep affection for her husband has moved many Chinese people.
In 2003 Qinhuangdao authority began to repair the Shanhaiguan section of the Great Wall in the city, and now it has started the plan to build and publicize the image of Mengjiangnu as "Eastern Eros." As an extension of the Great Wall culture, Mengjiangnu culture also affects Chinese people |

Mount Jiao, 3 kilometers north of Shanhaiguan, the easternmost pass through the main section of the Great Wall, stands the 519 meter Jiaoshan Peak. Though relatively diminutive in size, this is the first actual mountain the Great Wall passes heading west, and so is known as "the first mountain of the Great Wall."

about 1,500 meters, from Hanmenguan at the foot of the mountain to Dapingding , the highest point. There are three watch towers and four beacon towers.
This section is built of locally quarried rock and bricks. The height of the wall ranges from seven to ten meters, following the contours of the mountain itself, and the average width is four to five meters, although at one point it narrows to just 2.7 meters.
The biggest watch tower is on the summit of Jiaoshan. The two-story structure is built in four sections, with the top forming a rough square 10.4 meters by 10.2 meters. Along the top are watch holes and embrasures for shooting arrows. |
