Langmusi is a village on the border of Sichuan and Gansu provinces. A sleepy village in a remote breathtaking location inhabited by a mix of Han Chinese, Hui and Tibetans. It is said that the provincial borderline runs through the middle of town with Sertri Gompa in Gansu and Kirti Gompa in Sichuan. The power struggles between the two Gompa may have been the reason for the border location.

Jiayuguan city is located in the middle part of Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, which was the gullet of the ancient" Silk Road." It has a population of 200,000 and a total area of 2,935 square meters.
Jiayuguan is an industrial city flourishing with a large iron & steel production base. People of many different ethnicities, such as Han, Hui, Tibetan, Dongxiang, Yugu, Baoan, Hazake, Tu, Sala, Manchu, and Mongolian, live here. As Jiayuguan is in the warm variable zone, it has an arid climate. Jiayuguan has three defense lines: an inner city, an outer city, and a moat. |

Jiayuguan Pass, located at the narrowest point of the western section of the Hexi Corridor, 6 kilometers southwest of Jiayuguan city in Gansu province,is the first pass at the west end of the Great Wall of China. Meanwhile it is one of the most important 3 passes, rest ruin as Juyongguan Pass and Shanhaiguan Pass.

Among the passes on the Great Wall, Jiayuguan is the most intact ancient fortification. The pass is also known by the name the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven",which is used to be confused with the "First Pass under Heaven",a name for Shanhaiguan at the east end of the Great Wall near Qinhuangdao, Hebei. Also Jiayuguan is a key waypoint of the ancient Silk Road.

Dunhuang, situated in the common boundary of Gansu Province, Qinghai Province and Xinjiang Province, was the hub of middle and eastern silk routes in ancient times. From Mt.Qilian in the south, Mt. Mazong in the north and desert from east to west, the landform of Dunhuang City is a declining basin-plain from west to northeast, high in the north and south, and low in the middle.
In ancient times, Dunhuang once was the trade center between China and its western neighbors. On that peroid, it was the most westerly frontier military |

garrison in China. With the flourishing of trade along the Silk Road, Dunhuang was prompted to become the most open area in international trade in Chinese history. It provided the only access westward for western nationalities.
Today, Dunhuang is a typical tourist city, clean and beautiful. For a western city in China, it has become more accesible for people to come and go as they please. Transportation is much more efficient, ensuring that your wonderful trip runs smoothly. May to September is the best time to visit, so be sure to plan your trip during these months. Including Dunhuang City in your tour is a decision you won't regret! |

The Mogao Grottoes form a system of 492 temples 25km southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. Construction of the Buddhist cave shrines began in 366 CE as places to store scriptures and art. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along with Longmen Grottoes, Yungang Grottoes and Dazu Grottoes, are one of the four famous ancient sculptural sites of China.
After the discovery of approximately 50,000 Buddhist writings and Holy |

Scriptures at Dunhuang around 1900, Dunhuang gained a great fame for its Buddhist art relics. The UNESCO has listed Dunhuang's Mogao Grottoes on its list of the world's cultural legacies worthy of special protection in December of 1987.
The mural paintings of Dunhuang are especially famous and focus on presenting images of the Buddha and Buddhist legends, but also include examples of landscape paintings, historic architectures, portraits of the noble patrons, various auspicious animals, plants and other decorations. One of the main themes of the frescoes is the fiction; heavenly maidens painted into the frescoes act as frames on the murals or otherwise decorate the paintings. |

Crescent Moon Spring is 6km south of Dunhuang in the Singing Sands Mountains and is quite literally an oasis in the desert. The Spring's name derives from the crescent moon shape the small pool of spring water has taken between two large sand dunes. Although the area is very dry, the pool doesn't dry up as one might expect.
The Singing Sand Mountains are famous for the sounds the wind makes when blowing over the dunes. Also, the sand is said to be rather noisy when tread upon. The dunes are also famous for their size, some reaching 100m or more, relatively stable despite the fact that the dunes beyond the mountains shift frequently. Also, the sands are said to regain form overnight if tread upon the day before. |

“Yadan,” which refers to a precipitous hillock in the Uygur language, is a kind of wind-eroded landform. Yadan landforms rise above the flat Gobi Desert and cover a vast area. Due to its eccentric landforms, the hard-to-spot roads, low-lying terrain, strong magnetism and howling sounds made by the wind, the area is also called "Ghost City" by local people. Yadan National Geologic Park is located on the northwest of Dunhuang, 180 kilometers away from the city. Yadan Landforms is the largest in scale, fully developed in geology and most valuable for ornament in the world. It is 25 kilometers long from east to west and 18 kilometers wide from south to north. The scenery area can be divided into two parts. The scenery sites have an infinite variety of fantastic phenomena and the superlative craftsmanship of nature. Many world famous architects can find their miniatures here.
It is a physiognomy landscape formed by Aeolian erosion. It is composed of various sculptures, and one may find numerous well known architectures here. Because of the eeriness of the sound of the wind blowing at night, the locals refer to it as Ghost Town. |

Yangguan Pass is located about 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Dunhuang. Yumen Pass another grand pass is 90 km northwest of Dunhuang, also acted as important passageways to Central Asia, India and Europe. Emperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty (206BC - 24AD) built these two important passes in 121BC when he opened the areas west of the Yellow River in Gansu and established the four prefectures of Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiuquan, and Dunhuang there.
In order to resist the Huns (Xiongnu) and manage the West Region, emperor of the Han dynasty established Yangguan Pass and Yumenguan Pass. It was the main access to West Region and an important conjunction on the south route of the Silk Road.
Yangguan Pass once was the gateway to the Xiyu area and an important pass on the Silk Road. Buddhist monk Xuan Zang set foot there on his return to Chang'An (Xian) from India. During that period, Yangguan Pass, as a military stronghold, was rich in water and was an oasis.
