Hangzhou The capital of Zhejiang Province, is by the Qiantang River at the southern end of the Grand Canal on the east coast of China. Hangzhou is one of the most beautiful cities in China with its West Lake and almost year-round green surroundings. The city was founded over 2000 years ago. It began to prosper as a trading center after the completion of Grand Canal in 610 A.D. when Emperor Yangdi of the Sui Dynasty extended the construction from Suzhou to Hangzhou. Marco Polo visited this city by the end of the century, and this Venetian explorer admired its beauty and prosperity as “the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world”.
For centuries, this scenic city has been a famous and ideal place to attract crowd of artists and poets coming for seeking inspiration, while wealthy people and retired officials moving here for comfortable life. Additionally, Hangzhou is also popular for its silk worms with products and Tea planting with the famous Longing (Dragon Well) tea, which had made it more attractive to the outside of the world for centuries.

West Lake
Enclosed by the hills on three sides, the West Lake mirrors the surrounding landscape to form a panorama of great beauty. The West Lake was originally part of the Qitang River until its outlet became silted up. It is now 15 kilometers in circumference with an average depth of 1.8 meters. Luxurious trees and flowers grow around the lake in fresh color year round. It has been a scenic resort since the Tang Dynasty (618 A.D.-906 A.D.). The Su and Bai Causeways divide the lake into three parts.
The best way to enjoy the lake is to take a cruise so that you could see the view of the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon closely over the water and tour the scenic sports in a shortcut to Ping Hu Qiu Yue (peaceful lake and autumn moon) at the southeastern end of Gu Shan Hill and Hua Gang Guan Yu (Viewing Fish in the Flower Harbor) on the other side along the lake etc. |

Water Town of Wuzhen
Wuzhen, a newly opened site to tourists, is an old water town with the distance around 200 kilometers from Shanghai. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful water towns in China. It is a typical water town by the side of the Grand Canal with the water crisscrossing through the entire area. The flat houses, mainly with gray bricks had been built along the river over hundreds of years by successive generations. You will have the chance to take the wooden boat rowing over the water, going zigzag through the small bridges one after another to find the local people playing cards and tasting tea relaxedly in Tea Stand by the side of the water. This small water town is also highlighted by its bazaar where you could find a large selection of silk works and hand made crafts at reasonable prices. It is a great place to wander around by tourists to find the ancient docks, waterside pavilions and corridors stretching for miles, which present a typical and harmonic atmosphere to the water town in South of China.

Hangzhou's Tea
Tea is popular everywhere in China, but few places enjoy Hangzhou's reputation for tea - an undefined element that seems to encompass all things related to tea. On the first day of Chinese lunar new year a cup of spring tea is offered to the Goddess of Mercy in wish of yearlong well-being. To confirm marital relations tea is the last betrothal gift to the parents of the would-be bride. As to popular tea culture, nothing is more representative than the teahouses that line West Lake |
|

and huddle in the valleys of surrounding hills. Brews of tea are not cheap, but the price of a pot buys hours of lazing around, a favorite activity of locals and visitors as well.
West Lake Dragon Well tea, grown on the hills surrounding the city, is Hangzhou's specialty. From growing it to writing poetry about it, the green tea is consumed in almost everywhere within it. High-grade Dragon Well is expensive - often displayed in luxury shops like jewelry. |

feeding and silk production.

Hazy Fisher Village Is famous for the scenery of willow haze, mist and smoke from kitchen chimneys.

Hangzhou Cuisine
Zhejiang cuisine is one of the eight famous culinary schools in China. Comprising the specialties of Hangzhou, Ningbo and Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province ("a land of fish and rice"), the cuisine, not greasy, wins its reputation for freshness, tenderness, softness, and smoothness of its dishes with mellow fragrance. Hangzhou cuisine is the most famous one among the three. It is noted for choice of fine ingredients, elaborate preparation, refreshing taste and varying techniques of cooking, such as sautéing, stewing, and stir-and-deep-frying.
|
|
| |
The typical dishes of the cuisine are: West Lake Fish in Vinegar Gravy, Dongpo Pork, Beggar's Chicken, Longjing Shrimp, Aunt Song's Fish Soup and West Lake Water Shield Soup. Reminiscent of the romantic scenery around Hangzhou, these dishes are delicate, tender, refreshing and crisp. And many famous dishes have interesting stories associated with them. For example, legend has it that a Hangzhou thief invented Beggar’s Chicken. As he had no stove, he wrapped the stolen bird in clay and baked it in a hole in the ground. Another version explains that he was a hungry thief who found a way to cook his bird and keep it and its aroma secret! |
