Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province, China. It makes an excellent base for exploring mountains, caves, rivers, and minority cultures (including traditional Han Chinese culture lost in many areas) of the province. |

Huangguoshu Waterfall is one of the largest waterfalls in China and East Asia located on the Baishui River in Anshun, Guizhou province. It is 77.8 m high and 101 m wide. The main waterfall is 67 m high and 83.3 m wide.
Known as the Huangguoshu Waterfall National Park, it is 45 km southwest of Anshun City. Together with minor waterfalls, the charms of the waterfall is a natural tourist draw.
Huangguoshu Waterfall's vista changes depending on the location of the viewer. One viewing spot is Waterfall-Viewing Pavilion (Guan Bao ting), where you see the whole waterfall from a distance. Another is Water-Viewing Stage (Guan Bao Ting) where you get a bird's eye view. The third is Waterfall-Viewing Stage (Guan Bao Tai) in which you raise your head to see the scene.

Tianxing Bridge Reserve
is located in lower reaches of the Huangguoshu Waterfall in Anshun city, Guizhou province. It is noted for narrow gorges, aquatic stone forest and karst caves. The beautiful scenery has attracted many tourists and it was one of the shooting sites of a famous Chinese TV "Pilgrimage to the West".

A national scenic resort, the Longgong(Dragon Palace) Cave at Longtan Village, Anshun, is a topographical phenomenon that is typical of a limestone landmass. It is actually a cave, whose gorgeous interior is suggestive of the crystal palace in Chinese mythology. A 3,000-metre section of the underground river that runs through the "palace" has been opened up, so that tourist boats can sail directly into its depth. Its main part consists of magnificent karst river caves and a waterfall inside the cave, including the Dragon's Palace, the Rape Lake, the Whirlpool and the Leech Pass. Its strange krast cave is one of typical karst landforms in China even in the world, as result of erosion to soluable rock by flowing water. Its centre area is made up with the Dragon-Sleeping Lake, the Guest-Receiving Cave, the Dragon-Grate Flying Waterfall, Heaven-Ladder Cave the Dragon's Pool, a subterranean lake in the Dragon's Palace, the Clamshell Rock, the Tiger's Den and others. The water runs through the five subterranean sections of the river and lake stringed together, in and out five times. Being as long as 15 kilometers, it is the longest singularly shaped in China up to now. Huaxi Park. Another popular day trip south of Guiyang in Huaxi township, Huaxi Park is an excellent escape from the heat and bustle of the city. The park with its streams, pavilions and tea gardens is popular for Guiyang residents who enjoy setting up their own barbeques and enjoying a picnic. Of historical note, former Premier Zhou Enlai and his wife visited Huaxi Park in the 1950s. A billboard sized photograph of the couple enjoying a boat ride graces the main entrance to the park.

Tianhetan Pool located at the southeast of Guiyang suburbs, is a newly developed typical karst scenic spot.
Composed of waterfalls, cliffs, karst caves, springs and stone bridges, the Tianhetan Pool is considered a fairyland of natural sceneries. The waterwheels, watermills and the water-powered rollers also add idyllic atmosphere to this spot. Thus make the place more attractive to visitors.
After pass the Yanlingmen (a stone gate), visitors can get to the Tianhetan Pool directly. It is a large pool with crystal clear water, hanging cliffs and caves placed in one side. There are two caves, one is a land cave and the other is a cave with underground water. In side the cave are the picturesque views of stalactites and stalagmites. Tourists can visit it by boat.
Wolong sandbar is 500 meters downstream from Tianhetan pool. When the water flows over the travertine sandbar; it turns into a 210-metre-wide splendid Tianhetan Waterfall. The limestone cave at the foot of the waterfall, concealed behind the water-screen, decorated the magnificent waterfall an even more fascinating perspective. |

Originally built in 1378 for the military reasons, Qingyan Ancient Town is now one of the most famous historical and cultural towns in Guizhou Province. Due to the local geology, the town was built completely of stone. Its city walls built right on the cliffs with giant rocks look very spectacular, which divided the town itself into inner and outer towns. The town is located only 29 km south of Guiyang City and occupies 3 square kilometers.
Qingyan Ancient Town is famed for its old buildings. It has 9 monasteries, 8 temples, 5 pavilions, 3 caves, 2 ancestral halls, 1 palace and 1 courtyard. They all have carved beams and painted rafters, look very grand. Apart from the Chinese buildings, a Christian church and a Catholic cathedral are also found here.
Rambling on the street, you can see the layout of the town keeps a very special architectural style, which is known as belonging to that of the Ming and Qing dynasties. You can see the intact Chaomen (monumental gateway) and wickets of the town. There are many elegant classical wooden houses on the sides of its ancient business streets. In the shops, many shopkeepers still show their time-honored stone or wooden sales counters. If you like, you can stop at one of those tea houses to sip a cup of tea and taste of the local flavorous snacks, such as Qingyan tofu, rice tofu and rose sugar. |

Located 72 kilometers west of Guiyang, Tianlong Tunpu Old Town is actually an outpost position of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). In 1381 A.D., for continuing his southward war, the first emperor of the dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhan stationed his soldiers here and built many stone barracks.
In China, Tianlong Tunpu is worthy of the name "the No.1 Stone Town in Southwest China" as all its houses were built of stones, even the locals' daily utensils. Stone foundations, stone walls, flagstone roofs, stone watchtowers, stone wall crenels, stone upstairs and stone dog holes...for centuries, the locals have characterized their houses as their army ancestors.The people in Tianlong Tunpu still keep a very simple and peculiar army-style way of life. They dress in the Ming style. Especially the women, their traditional costumes come with long blue robes and white or black turban. They speak with the accent of their native regions on the south of Yangtze River and eat food with army flavor of the Ming Dynasty.
In Tianlong Tunpu, the locals play a very old and interesting opera-Dixi (Ground Opera), which is known as the Living Fossil of Chinese Drama. The operas recreated the ancient Chinese tales from the Three Kingdoms (220-265) Period and the Tang (618-907) Dynasty. The performers wear black crepes and put wooden masks on their foreheads to ensure their voice could be heard by the audience. According to the Tunpu people, the opera indicates the minority people worshiping the god, expelling the ghost and praying for peace. When the visitors come to the town and request a watch, the locals will be very glad to show you a wonderful performance.
Today, about 5000 people reside in Tianlong Tunpu Old Town. They take care of their civilization as good as ever, thus their buildings, culture and unique customs have intoxicated many folklorists, military specialists, architects and archeologists from all over the world. |

Hongfeng Lake is 33 kilometers westsouthern far from Guiyang City. It covers a total of 240 square kilometers, with the water area of 57.2 square kilometers, and holds 600 million cubic meters of waters. It is the largest man-made lake in Guizhou Plateau. According to the statistics, Hongfeng Lake is 12 times larger than the Ming Tombs' Reservoir in Beijing and is as large as 6 West Lake in Hangzhou and has more than 100 scattered islands.
Around the lake there planted more than one hundred maple trees. In late fall, the red maple leaves reflect in the water and it seems that even the lake is red. However, some people believe that the lake is named after its shape of being like a maple of leaf falling down on the ground. |
