Datong, situated at the center of Datong Basin,is in the northern part of Shanxi Province. Through ages Datong had been an important garrison town because of its strategical location on the Yu River and bordering on Inner Mongolia. Datong was once served as the capital city during the North Wei Dynasty (386A.D.-534A.D), The city had officially become the center of provincial government in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the tall city walls were fortified in the early Ming Dynasty.
Datong is not only a Buddhist attraction but also the nearest city to Mt. Hengshan, one of the four holy mountains of Taoism in China. Therefore this city is popular for its harmonious coexistence of religions, together with its strategic importance in geography and unique rugged terrain in scenery. Coal mining is the dominant industry.

Yungang Grottoes
The Yungang Grottoes are said to be the best preserved sites in China with 53 caves containing over 51,000 stone carvings of Buddha and bodhisattvas. These status range from the tallest of 17 meters to the shortest of a few centimeters high with some of them still retain their original color. The grottoes were built between 460 A.D. and 494 A.D. in the Northern Wei just before the capital city of that dynasty was moved to Luoyang to build another set of grottoes there afterwards. |
|
 |
| |
In 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered as a "masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art... [and] ...represent the successful fusion of Buddhist religious symbolic art from south and central Asia with Chinese cultural traditions, starting in the 5th century CE under Imperial auspices." |

Hanging Temple and Mt.Hengshan
The Hanging Monastery was built in 491A.D.. It has been survived over 1500 years. It was re-constructed and refurbished on a large scale in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The architecture of the whole monastery is a great wonder as the whole structure is supported only by simple buildup with framework and rock. There are around 40 halls with 80 sculptures which are vividly carved from copper, iron, terracotta and stone in this temple. Mt.Hengshan,80 km south of Datong, lies one of the Five Sacred Mountains in China. The mountain is also a holy mountain for Taoists.
