The mighty Yangtze River, also called Chang Jiang in China, is the third largest river in the world. At 6,300 kilometers, the Yangtze River runs across many provinces and cities in China, which makes it to be regarded as the "mother river" by the Chinese people. This extensive waterway cuts through the heart of China, and is regarded as by the Chinese as marking the division of their country into north and south, both geographically and culturally. The Yangtze River rises in the far western part of China and flows through eight provinces before disgorging its waters into the Yellow Sea. Over 700 tributaries draining a further six provinces join the Yangtze along its course.
And also, along the Yangtze River, the Three Gorges is the most famous scenic spot. It is started from the White King City of Fengjie to the Nanjing Pass of Yichang, including Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge, which is 193 kilometers long in all. At the same time, the construction of the Three Gorges Project makes the ancient and magic Yangtze Three Gorges more active. Three Gorges Project is the largest hydro-electric project in the world at present scale. As the construction of the Three Gorges Project, the water level rises, made the existing wonder more worth seeing as it turned water into green-clearly color, wider passage, mountains and gorges remained tall and proud. |

Chongqing is the largest and most populous of the People's Republic of China's four provincial-level municipalities, and the only one in the less densely populated western region of China. Its night view is very famous. Soon after the dusk, myriad twinkling lights will soon greet the eyes. Consisted of the light of street lamps, the dazzling stream of light looks just like bright pearls. The panorama has fully demonstrated the majestic feature of a mountain city. Standing on the Kanjiang Pavilion located on the top of Eling Park, one is sure to enjoy more than the eye could take in.
The majestic construction of the People's Great Hall is the landmark of Chongqing. The whole building displays elegant design, superb craft and the harmonious disposition of colors. Especially the dome above the front gate, a typical architectural creation in Chinese antique flavor, is highly praised by the tourists from abroad and home. |

Ciqikou is an old town preserved in sprawling modern Chongqing, about an hour's drive from the city centre. It's an old sleepy town built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Although it's preserved as a tourist town you don't have to pay to get in. The town's name, Ciqikou, means porcelain harbor, and the community prospered from the porcelain trade. Today it offers a glimpse of the peaceful laid-back life in the Sichuan countryside and is somewhere to take a break from the busy commercial world of Chongqing.
A number of old courtyard compounds still stand here. Small as it is, the town used to have several temples, and one of them, Taoism temple, had been turned into an elementary school.
The old town has only two main streets and they've been taken up by all kinds of shops. The teahouse puts on a diverse range of entertainment with shows staged from time to time. And this is the famous Sichuan show, 'Changing the face'. The biggest secret is how the performer changes his masks. In this performance, he has to switch masks something like nine times. It's such a difficult trick that sometimes it does not work, but the audience will always forgive him. |

Baodingshan Cultural Relic - Dazu Grottoes
It is, 81 km by express way, west of the city proper of Chongqing, the stone carvings of Dazu, chiefly consisting of Buddhists images, are the art of religious nature, built continuously from the Tang Dynasty (618AD) to the Southern Song dynasty (1179-1249) under the direction of a celebrated monk-- Zhao Zhifeng. Nearly 10,000 carvings were engraved on the cliff side about 500m long and over 10m high in a U-shaped valley. The subjects are different with each other and are placed in sequence. So to visit the place is just like reading an interesting |

| |
comic strip. In 1961, they appeared on the list of the first group of important cultural relics under state protection as announced by the State Council and in 1999 they were inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List by the UNESCO.
Nevertheless, the stone carvings of Dazu Grottoes differ somewhat from the stone sculpture produced in the previous period. Emphasizing on both the law of aesthetic standards and the law of art form, the outstanding practice in Dazu was regarded as a good example to promote the advance of the grotto art from chiseling to cliffside carving.Apart from being an important component of China's grotto art, it is a glorious chapter in the history of worldwide grotto art during the years from the 9th to 13th centuries. In resent years, fund has been introduced, fundamental construction has been strengthened and necessary accessories have been improved at the resort in order to reinforce the |

protection and utilization and rationally exploit the tourism resources. Baodingshan cultural relic site is developed into a first-rank, multi-functional and environmental protection resort. The site is never short of fresh green plants and towering old trees. |

Shennongjia, the well-known natural reservation area,is 250KM about and situated in northwestern Yichang of Hubei, covering an area of over 3,000 square kilometers. The special terrain here creates a warm and humid climate, making it a paradise for plants and animals at the meeting point of North and South China.
Known as “The Oriental Botanic Garden” and the natural gene bank of biological species, it shelters some of the world’s rare or endangered plants and animals, such as Chinese dove trees, South China tigers, white bears and white snakes.
Shennongjia is the “Sacred Green Land” in people’s minds, where a primitive natural ecology is well preserved. In 1986 with the approval of the State Council, Shennongjia became “The National Nature Reserve of Forests and Wild Animal Species”.
In 1990, UNESCO accepted it into the protection network of “Man and Biosphere”. In 1992, it was selected as the “Demonstration of Natural Reserve of Bio-diversity” by the United Nations Development Program.
The tourist resources provide an array of attractions: the primitive forests, mountains and valleys, brooks and waterfalls, rare animals and plants, as well as the mysterious “wild men”. A trip to Shennongjia can be done with various focuses: scientific research and study, adventures, sightseeing and holidays, as well as skiing and snow fun.
There are over twenty major scenic spots in Shennongjia, including Fengjingya, Hongping Valley, Shennong Top, Source of Fragrant Brook and Dajiu Lake.
Shennong Top, known as the first peak in central China, is 3105.4 meters above sea level, where traces of ancient floods can still be seen through the mountain top, the slope, the uneven surface, the exposed huge rocks, and many pebbles.
Fengjingya is a dream-like place with many spectacular views: changing clouds and mist, exotic stone poles and stone peaks, and magnificent mountains reflected in the lucid water. |

Fengdu
Fengdu City is believed to be the nether world of the King of Hades, therefore it is characterized with its ‘ghost’ culture of China since ancient times. In Chinese culture the social structure in hell is similar to that of the real world with the governmental administration and functional department. One’s soul will have to go through the final judgment by those concerned units with the solution of good reward to honest ones and severe punishment to the criminals. It will take you only 5 minutes to get there by bus and switch to ropeway up to the mountain by another couple of minutes. The whole trip lasts about two to three hours. |
Snow Jade Cave
This tourist spot is located at the east of Chongqing near Fengdu. This Snow Jade Cave is formed from Karst, created around 50,000 years ago but only recently discovered by local farmers. The cave was opened to the public in late 2003. The Snow Jade Cave has a total length of 1.6 kilometers. All visitors to the cave have enjoyed and wondered about those breathtaking formations with the help of colorful lightening to develop one’s imagination greatly. The trip will last about three hours. |
| |
Shibaozhai
Shibaozhai Pagoda was first built during the regime of Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty in 1750. It is a 12-story wooden pagoda with its height of 56 meters, standing by the side of Yangtze River. Built against the side of a sheer rectangular cliff, it is truly a magnificent structure. It has been named the "Pearl of the Yangtze”. It is said that the pagoda was built to commemorate Guanyu who was known as the god of military in Chinese. One could have a bird eye’s view of the Yangtze River when climbing up to the top of the pagoda. The trip will take about two hours
Wanxian
Wanxian is a small mountainous city served as the gateway of the eastern Sichuan Province. It was first built in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and developed as a treaty port in 1902. Wanxian is popular for its rich harvest of orange, tangerine and peach with good quality. It is also well-known for its silk spinning and weaving industry. In addition to the tour attraction of visiting the museum of hanging coffins, another highlight relies on a local market with great variety of the local products. |
Shennong Stream
The Shennong Stream with its length of 60-kilometer is in the southern part of the Shennongjia Reserve. It starts at Mt. Shennong Jia in Hubei Province north of the Yangtze with its breathtaking scenery of Parrot Gorge and Dragon Boot Gorge. The stream is running north to south through deep gorges and terminating its journey by merging with the Yangtze at the mouth of the Wuxia Gorge. |
| |
You could absorbingly experience how powerful the current is by taking a tour in sampan over this rapid stream. Additionally, while sailing through the treacherous gorges you could also enjoy the spectacular view of ancient plank roads, ancient suspension coffins, aqueous caves, rainbow fountain and even wild lives. The Shennong Stream is regarded as one of the most attractive scenic spots along the Yangtze River with its unpolluted clear water flowing swiftly and astonished scenery flanking the stream. The whole trip lasts around four hours. |
Lesser Three Gorges
The Lesser Three Gorges refer to the three separate valleys of the Da-ning River, namely "Dragon-Gate Gorge", "Misty Gorge" and "Dicui (Emerald) Gorge". Those three gorges, with an area of 160 hectares of forest, stand on the lower reaches of Da-ning River extending from the entrance of the Dragon-Gate Gorge in the South to Tujiaba in the North for 50 kilometers.A motor launch tour to those sites is regarded as one of the highlights during the Yangtze River Cruise. You could adventure a water-bound sensation you never experienced previously Beijing over the water and at meanwhile you could enjoy the subtle mountains, clear waters, pretty rocks, dangerous rapids, sharp turns, fantastic caves, |
| |
and stalactites in various shapes. If you are lucky enough, you could have a glimpse of wild monkeys actively jumping over the rock. Furthermore, you could also find the rustic beauty with local farming, mandarin ducks, water birds and fish, all of which characterize the natural view in the Lesser Three Gorgers. The entire tour lasts around five hours. |
The Three Gorges Dam
The Three Gorges Dam is considered as the largest water conservancy project ever undertaken by human being so far. It is now being built at Sandouping in the middle of Xiling Gorge. After the completion, the elevation of the water will be raised to a level of 175 meters above sea level, creating a 600-kilometer long reservoir with a storage capacity of 39.9 billion cubic meters, extending from the dam-site all the way to Chongqing City in Sichuan Province. |
| |
The purpose of building this huge dam is aimed at flood control, electricity, navigation and irrigation. The construction of the dam formally started since 1994.The first stage of the project had been finished in 2003. When the dam is completed in 2009, ships will continue cruising over the Yangtze River, but many historical sites will have to be moved up to a higher land. It is planned with a blueprint of building up the largest national park in the world and a submarine museum to preserve the inscriptions on the White Crane Ridge. The best way to find out the details of the present and future of this dam is to take this two to three hours’ tour there personally. |

Yellow Crane Tower, located on Snake Hill in Wuchang, is one of the "Three Famous Towers South of Yangtze River (the other two: Yueyang Tower in Hunan and Tengwang Tower in Jiangxi).
Legend goes that that here used to be a wine-shop opened by a young man surnamed Xin. One day, a Taoist priest, in order to thank the man for his favor of free wine, drew a magic crane on the wall and told it to dance on hearing claps. Since then, thousands of people came to see the spectacle and the wine shop was always full of |
| |
guests. After 10 years, when the Taoist priest's revisit the wine shop, he played the flute and then rode on the crane to the sky. In order to memorize the supernatural encounter and the priest, the Xins built a tower here named Yellow Crane Tower.
According to records, the tower was first built in 223 A.D during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280). After completion, the tower once served as a gathering place for celebrities and poets to make merry and compose poetry. It was estimated that up to the Tongzhi Reign of the Qing dynasty, as many as 300 poems about the tower had been found in the historical literature, in which "Yellow Crane Tower" wrote by Cui Hao, a famous poet of Tang dynasty (618-907) made the tower well known throughout China.
Destroyed many times in successive dynasties, the tower was rebuilt time and again until 100 years ago when it was for the last time reduced to ashes. The present tower is the result of four years of construction beginning in 1981. The tower, 51.4 meters high, is five-storied with yellow tiles and red pillars, overlapping ridges and interlocking eaves, more magnificent than the old one. The ground floor of the new is 20 meters wide in each side and the old tower is only 15 meters wide. Therefore we can say that Yellow Crane Tower has been reconstructed instead of being renovated. |
